Family Dynamics
Loss/absence of the father:
In cases where the father, who in the patriarchal family order is supposed to protect the
'honor' of the girl child, dies, refuses to take care of her, is ill/elderly/disabled or
divorced, and there is no male in the family to whom this gender role can be transferred,
the mother or other family members may demand that the girl child be married off to a
man as soon as possible to 'ensure her protection'. For the family, this is a transfer of
responsibility.[28]
If the father died and there are no other male elders in the family, such as brothers
or uncles, it is understandable that the GIRL is married off so that not let her run
loose

While 73% of Turkish citizens answered “disagree” for girls and 78% for boys (all Roma),
66% of respondents from Syria answered “agree”.
Looking at the responses of those who were married bethe age of 18 (171
respondents): in the absence of a father or male family elder, the rate of those
who disagree with marrying a girl drops to 44%, while the rate for boys does not
change much with 53%. A similar situation is observed in the case of remarriage
after the death of the mother or father.
